Photographing Sydney’s Rockpools #01

Photographing Sydney’s Rockpools #01

Living in Sydney affords me the privilege of exploring some truly spectacular beaches. Stretching approximately 70km from Palm Beach in the north to Cronulla in the south, Sydney’s coastline is genuinely stunning. One unique feature I've particularly come to appreciate is the city's collection of man-made rockpools—accessible to everyone, free of charge, and open year-round. Interestingly, out of approximately 150 rockpools worldwide, Sydney hosts 34 of them.

My initial encounter with these intriguing pools occurred during a bus ride from Mascot to Bondi, sparking the idea to document each of them through maybe three photographs.

While my initial plan primarily involved aerial photography using my drone, I decided to bring along my an old film camera just in case. I chose to begin this endeavour at the southernmost rockpool, progressively making my way northward in the weeks ahead.

My first photographic excursion will involve a hour and a half journey to capture the three southernmost rockpools. Over the coming weeks, I intend to continue my exploration, photographing the sequence of pools from Oak Park Rock Pool all the way north to Palm Beach Rock Pool, weather permitting. This represents my first comprehensive photographic project, marking a departure from my usual practice of capturing individual, standalone images. I anticipate maintaining consistency in editing will be crucial to the coherence of this collection.

In my next update, I'll share my experiences and the resulting photographs from Cronulla of the three southernmost rockpools. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
